So, let’s pull up a chair, pour your favourite Michter’s, and take a proper look at one of Kentucky’s most celebrated distilleries.
A History That Started Before America Was America
Michter’s story begins in 1753. Yes, a full 23 years before the Declaration of Independence, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded a small distillery near Snitzel Creek in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. The operation changed hands over the following century and became known as Bomberger’s Distillery in the 1800s under the ownership of Abraham Bomberger, a name that still lives on in the Michter’s range today.
The brand name “Michter’s” itself didn’t actually appear until the mid-20th century, when owner Lou Forman combined the names of his two sons, Michael and Peter, to create it. Clever, heartfelt, and very American. Prohibition shut things down in 1919, and while the distillery eventually reopened, hard times returned with a vengeance. By 1989, bankruptcy had claimed the operation and left the Michter’s name seemingly lost to history.
Enter Joseph J. Magliocco, a Yale and Harvard Law graduate with a genuine love of whiskey and the vision to resurrect a near-forgotten legend.
Together with mentor Richard Newman, Magliocco purchased the abandoned trademark in the 1990s and, rather than revive operations in Pennsylvania, made the bold decision to move the brand to the heart of American whiskey country: Kentucky.
Three Locations, One Relentless Vision
Today, Michter’s operates across three distinct Kentucky sites, and each one plays a specific, carefully considered role in the brand’s story.
The Shively Distillery in Louisville is where the real production magic happens. Spanning 14.3 acres and covering over 88,000 square feet, this is Michter’s primary distilling, processing, and bottling facility. It’s a serious, purpose-built operation that began construction in 2012 and produced its first whiskeys in 2015.
Fort Nelson Distillery/Visitors Hub sits on the famous Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville, and it’s a genuinely special place to visit. Michter’s purchased the historic Fort Nelson building in 2011 and in true Michter’s fashion, spared no expense during restoration. This location also houses the original pot stills and cypress wood fermenters from the Pennsylvania distillery, some with history tracing all the way back to 1753.

Constructed in 1976 to produce Michter’s whiskey in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, the two pictured stills have come full circle and are now in use at Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery.
The Springfield Farm covers 205 hectares near Springfield, Kentucky, where Michter’s grows its own non-GMO corn, rye, and barley in collaboration with local farmers. The distillery fully traces every grain from field to bottle. A commitment that speaks volumes about how seriously this distillery takes what goes into every cask.
The Equipment: Where Craft Meets Precision
Michter’s approach to distillation is genuinely fascinating, and the equipment at Shively reflects a philosophy of doing things properly rather than quickly.
Production relies on two copper pot stills working alongside a custom-built copper column still. A 32-inch diameter, 46-foot-tall piece of engineering with a distinctive copper pot still doubler attached for the second distillation. That doubler is particularly important because it strips out residual impurities and drives the kind of flavour clarity that defines Michter’s house style.
Before any new make spirit enters a Michter’s barrel, it must pass two separate quality checks: a full chemical analysis using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GCMS) and a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system.
This is followed by a sensory review from a panel of trained human tasters.
Science and instinct, working together in equal measure. All Michter’s whiskey then ages in Kentucky rickhouses in new, charred American white oak barrels, going in only when it meets their exacting standards and coming out only when it’s genuinely ready.
What’s in the Bottle: The Michter’s Range
The US★1 Series forms the accessible core of the range, named to honour America’s first whiskey-making heritage. It includes the US★1 Small Batch Bourbon, US★1 Small Batch Rye, US★1 American Whiskey, and the distinctively smooth US★1 Sour Mash Whiskey. Whiskey fans have reason to celebrate as well, with Michter’s Distillery unveiling a major new core release in 2025 with another Musketeer joining the US★1 Series.
The new Michter’s US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey weighs in at 111.5 proof and is the first-ever barrel-proof version of the distillery’s iconic sour mash expression, delivering a richer, more intense tasting experience direct from the barrel.
Michter’s Limited Releases are offered from time to time and reflect the creativity of the production team.
The range includes 3 toasted barrel finishes, a barrel strength bourbon, and a barrel strength rye. Often only arriving to Australia in very small quantities.
The 10 Year Expressions are single barrel releases of both Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Kentucky Rye Whiskey, and they’re worth every penny of the hunt required to find them. The 10 Year Rye is a refined and elegant spirit, often aged significantly longer than its label suggests, with beautiful balance between spice, citrus, and deep caramel notes.
The 10 Year Bourbon is rich and full-bodied. The dram opens with deep layers of burnt toffee and molten caramel. The synergy between spirit and oak feels seamless, with waves of charred oak adding structure, while maple sweetness rounds out a long, satisfying finish.

The 20 Year Single Barrel Bourbon sits in ultra-premium territory and is one of the most sought-after bourbons in Australia and around the world. Michter’s release this whiskey in extremely limited quantities, with the latest edition bottled at 57.1% ABV. It carries notes of deep vanilla, toffee, chocolate, and warm spice.

“….we pay even extra special attention to our barrels once they are over 17 years old. At Michter’s we consider 17 to 20 years the “Fork In The Road Point” when certain barrels of whiskey can achieve an extraordinary level of quality. It is these particular barrels that our Master Distiller Dan McKee personally selects for our very limited bottling of Michter’s 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon”.
Michter’s Limited Production 25 Year Old’s
The grand dames of the portfolio, Michter’s 25 Year Rye and 25 Year Bourbon showcase more than 25 years of maturation in the distillery’s finest barrels. Rare and exceptionally limited, these whiskeys are released only when stocks allow and deliver extraordinary depth, richness, and complexity.
Subject to the costly evaporation of a quarter century of “Angel’s Share,” both 25yo’s continue the Michter’s tradition of sparing no expense in striving to offer the finest whiskey possible.
The Legacy Series pays direct homage to the distillery’s founding families through two annual limited releases: Bomberger’s Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey. Both feature innovative barrel aging, including Chinquapin oak barrels naturally seasoned outdoors and French oak finishes, making each vintage a genuinely distinct and experimental expression.
In 2025, Michter’s launched the first-ever Bomberger’s PFG™ (Precision Fine Grain) Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Michter’s first matures this Kentucky bourbon in new toasted and charred American oak barrels, then finished in custom French fine grain oak casks for added depth and complexity.

Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash is the crown jewel of the entire range.
First released in 2013, it’s a rare blend of extraordinary barrels selected at their absolute peak. The 2025 edition used just seven barrels – four rye and three bourbons, with the youngest whiskey over 12 years old and the oldest over 30 years. Michter’s produced only 315 bottles worldwide, and if you happen to land a bottle – you’re not just buying whiskey, you’re purchasing a piece of American distilling history.
Recognition That Speaks Loudly for Itself
In 2023, 2024, and again in October 2025, Drinks International named Michter’s The World’s Most Admired Whiskey, making it the first whiskey brand anywhere to claim that title three consecutive times. In January 2025, Drinks International ranked Michter’s the best-selling American whiskey in the world’s top bars. Not bad at all for a brand that was bankrupt and abandoned just 35 years ago.

Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson and Master Distiller Dan McKee continue to push creative boundaries.
They experiment with specialist oak varieties, unusual grain selections, and extended maturation periods that most distilleries wouldn’t consider commercially viable.
The Springfield farm, meanwhile, signals a long-term commitment to grain-to-glass traceability and sustainable sourcing that will only deepen as the brand grows.
