Some fantastic news for all you Tennessee whiskey lovers – As of February 2023, Shelbyville Tennessee’s very own Uncle Nearest American whiskey by Nearest Green Distillery has found a distribution partner in Australia with Swift & Moore handling all allocations and logistics. That means the pricing is much sharper compared to the parallel importing prices that were available at quite the premium. It’s also the fastest growing American whiskey brand in US history and is the most awarded bourbon or American whiskey of 2020, 2021 and 2022 with over 600 awards and accolades throughout the world to its name.
The brand was launched in 2017, named in honour of the first known African American master distiller, Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green who was a trailblazer of his time, perfecting the Lincoln County Process, where whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal prior to ageing in charred new-oak barrels – A process that defines Tennessee whiskey and makes it unlike any other distilled spirit in the world. Word at the Hollow tells us that Nearest Green passed on his distilling knowledge to one Jasper Newton Daniel when Jack was a young lad living on the Dan Call farm in Lynchburg Tennessee where Nearest Green plied his trade.
The distillery produces small batch whiskey, premium aged whisky, a master blend (cellar door only) and various rye’s with the Australian market receiving their 1856 premium aged whiskey and 1884 Small Batch whiskey for now. Each batch is curated by 5th generation Nearest Green descendant and Master Blender, Victoria Eady Butler and every bit of the distillery’s 323-acre, four-phase, $50 million build-out, is a master class in storytelling and history-making. No matter where you turn on the property, you’ll witness history-making moments of the past or history being made in the present. So much so, that the distillery has earned the nickname; “Malt Disney World.”
