The Amber Lane distillery is located in Wyong on the central coast of NSW and their story is literally forged in the stars. Friends and fellow amateur astronomers Rod Berry and Phil Townsend were enjoying dark rural night skies at Coonabarabran NSW during 2017 when serendipity intervened. During a daytime excursion in the region, they stumbled upon a small whisky distillery, and a dream coalesced and a sense of destiny has marked every step which has followed. Rod immersed himself in whisky knowledge and experience for many years and having toured numerous whisky distilleries in Australia and Scotland, Rod has a deep appreciation for the art and science of whisky production. Phil is passionate about excellence in whisky production and oversees the daily operations at the distillery.
Distillation is performed by ‘The Mary Rose’ – Amber Lane’s 3,600 litre Copper Still, designed to maximise copper-contact, thus producing more complex flavour chains; The very best seasoned barrels are sourced from premium producers of Spanish Pedro Ximenez, Oloroso Sherry and Kentucky Bourbon. The distillery uses larger barrels than many other Australian whisky producers (mainly 200-250L casks) which is super refreshing in our opinion, and employing 700ml bottles will only make the whisky more ‘palatable’ for the masses. Amber Lane whisky is non-chill filtered and with a conscious preference for releasing their whisky at higher alcohol strength, we call it a Win! Win! It also helps that their whisky is damn delicious – Expect big things from this Aussie distillery who have ticked all the right boxes, straight out of the gate.
As of 2024 – Amber Lane carries the enviable record, with every single release receiving a medal from the various whisky competitions around the globe.
