Backwoods Distilling Co. was established in 2017 after a tree-change took husband and wife team, Leigh and Bree Atwood to the historic and picturesque town of Yackandandah in the Victorian High-Country region of Australia. Working from their property, they handcraft whisky and spirits in small batches using local ingredients, spring water and a diverse selection of reclaimed barrels, with the aim of creating high-quality spirits that celebrate a unique flavour that only the Victorian High-Country region can offer.
The star of their distillery is the copper still, cheekily named ‘Stillvester Stillone’ that was fired up in January 2018, and as we patiently wait for their whisky to come of age, Bree and Leigh have released a Wild Rye spirit that we’ve had the pleasure of sampling. Aromatic, crisp, nutty and creamy – it’s a real winner and if this first release is the measuring stick, expect some very tasty whisky from Backwoods Distilling Co. that we’re looking very much forward to showcasing on our virtual shelves.
Well 2 years has gone by in a flash and at the time of ammending this piece (22nd August 2020), Backwoods distillery have released their first single malt whisky and rye whisky that sold out at their distillery in 24 hours – Quite the achievment indeed – Keepo an eye out on our virtual shelves as we’ll be stocking a handful of bothe releases for those who might have missed out.
