The 38-hectare farm where Cape Byron Distillery is based in the hinterland of Byron Bay
is also home to the Brookfarm family business. In 1988, distiller, Eddie Brook’s parents Pam and Martin purchased the rundown dairy farm to get away from city life and the family planted over 35,000 subtropical rainforest trees along with 4,000 macadamia trees to help regenerate the area.
The birth of Cape Byron Distillery on the family farm originated via a spontaneous friendship between Eddie Brook and Jim McEwan, the legend ‘Cask Whisperer’, one of the most awarded distillers on the planet and creator of The Botanist Gin. Eddie was working at Bruichladdich Distillery, where Jim was formerly the master distiller, however it wasn’t until Eddie gave the Scotland native an Australia-wide tour that the pair bonded and an instant connection was formed on the bedrock of shared family values, environmental sustainability and a love of distilling, and the rest, as they say….. is history.
Today, Cape Byron distillery is famous for their multi-award-winning ‘Brookies Gin’ varieties. Single malt whisky is also flowing from their stills and with Eddie trained in the art of distillation and mentored by Jim McEwan, you just know their whiskies are going to be something special with a real sense of terroir. Eddie and Jim’s co-creations of two delicious single malt whiskies were finally released to rave reviews in 2022 as the two distillers launched their whisky at sold out events all over Australia.
