Cradle Mountain Distillery is an institution which comes with quite the pedigree. Located in the western centre of Tasmania, it claims the title of the ‘first commercial Australian whisky company’ under its previous name “The Small Concern Whisky Distillery”. Cradle Mountain Whisky was first distilled by Brian Poke in 1989 under the name Darwin Distillery which was to be later named Franklin Distillery, after the Franklin barley style which was developed in the region.
In the early 1990’s, Andrew Morrison armed with a young 15-month-old sample of whisky, visited Scotland in the hope of gaining some perspective on the quality of the young whisky. He took it to the iconic, independent bottlers, Wm Cadenhead for a first impression and was blown away with the result. Wm Cadenhead ordered seven barrels on the spot, which in the early days would have been a big deal for the emerging company and the Tasmanian whisky industry.
Fast forward to 2015 and Cradle Mountain Whisky Company was revitalized by the Lahra family to ensure the continuous flow of fine spirit, and the legacy of the business. In 2023, the team outgrew their original facility and relocated to a larger space in Cradle Mountain. We’re proud to announce, for the very first time, the distillery has trusted us to promote their whisky on our virtual shelves to get their spirit on to as many lips as possible across the Aussie mainland.
