Just an hour from Hobart in Bothwell Tasmania, sits the historic Nant Estate (circa 1821). Nant’, meaning ‘stream’, was the name given by the first Welsh settlers to both the Valley and the Estate. Today, it’s the proud home to the Nant Distilling Company, producers of Tasmania’s first premium Single Malt Highland Whisky. After a few very unhappy and tumultuous years that is common knowledge, new life has been breathed into the distillery with new owners and management, who are in no way connected to the previous founder, board, company and/or brand.
In 2012, Nant Single Malt Whisky was catapulted to the world stage when Jim Murray, (whisky commentator), scored Nant Single Malt Whisky – American Oak Bourbon Wood 95.5 out of 100. This rarest of scores saw Nant rated among the top 50 whiskies in the world. The water that feeds the distillery winds its way down to the millpond from the river Clyde, which is fed by a million-year-old glacial lake in the Tasmanian Highlands. The Nant Estate sits over 1,000 feet above sea level meaning the whisky is drawn in and out of the barrels at a much more gradual rate; an effect that results in a more intense take up of the timber’s flavour and colour.
Pretty much the ‘perfect storm’ in whisky making.
