The Gospel Distillers are based in the inner-city Melbourne suburb of Brunswick and are one of Australia’s only dedicated rye whiskey distilleries (along with Belgrove). They make whiskey from 100% local Rye from a single farm in the Mallee River Region of South Australia and age their spirit in virgin American oak barrels. The distillery is currently the largest whiskey distillery in Australia with an output capacity of 369,000L of alcohol per year. It was designed and constructed by The Gospel founders, Ben Bowles and Andrew Fitzgerald and is co-funded by a US-based spirit and wine company.
Bowles & Fitzgerald utilised backgrounds in engineering and construction to custom design a six-metre-high Column and Copper Pot Still. The Column Still, one of only a handful used in Australia, helps to retain the unique flavours of The Gospel and is the only one designed and built entirely in-house.
The Gospel embodies the characteristics of traditional American rye whiskey with a flavour nuance that is distinctly Australian. Their unmalted rye grain imparts deep, spicy flavours of vanilla, cinnamon and dried fruit, with developing notes of pepper, grass and grain.
Whiskey is religion, Rye is The Gospel!
