The ‘Tasmanian Collection’ is the brainchild of the Tasmanian Whisky Producers Association (TWPA) who changed their name in 2019 to the more inclusive: Tasmanian Whisky & Spirits Association (TWSA), to commemorate Tasmanian Whisky Week in 2018 and 2019.
The 2018 collection was borne in 2015, when nine members of the TWPA each donated twenty-litres of new make spirit to be expertly blended at Tasmania Distillery. The distilleries included Sullivans Cove, Lark, Overeem, Belgrove, McHenry, Redlands, Mackey, Iron House and Fanny’s Bay. The resultant spirit was then used to fill eleven purpose-built casks. The filled 20 litre casks were then sent back to each respective distillery for maturation on site.
The 2019 collection was a single bottle released by the Tasmanian Whisky and Spirits Association at the Whisky Showcase during 2019 Whisky Week. It’s a vatted malt, blended using matured whisky from 14 different Tasmanian Distilleries including: Sullivans Cove, Lark, Overeem, McHenry, Old Kempton, Corra Linn, Nant, Launceston, Spring Bay, Adams, Hobart Whisky, Hellyers Road, Iron House and Killara.
These Collections are a snapshot in time of the skills of the Tasmanian whisky industry, which perfectly captures the unique terroir and subtleties gained from maturation in distinctly different surroundings. Robbie Gilligan President of the TWPA explains, “This is a collaboration unprecedented on a global scale and shows the strength and cohesion of the Tasmanian whisky industry. All proceeds from this collection will go towards supporting the development of Tasmanian whisky and it’s an honour to work in such a collaborative industry”.
