Ardnamurchan distillery is located on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula of Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands and was officially opened by HRH the Princess Royal on 25th July 2014. Its roots date back to 1826 when the Loch Katrine Adelphi distillery was built by Charles and David Gray on the banks of the river Clyde in the city of Glasgow. Ardnamurchan distillery was built, and is owned by Adelphi, an independent bottling company and the distillery is considered one of the remotest distilleries in Scotland.
With a keen eye on sustainability, the distillery is powered by renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint via hydro-electric power and a large bio-mass boiler using timber from the nearby Ardnamurchan forest. The boiler provides heat to the distillery floor maltings and the distillery and the whisky is created using water from springs above the distillery drawing from the Glenmore River.
The Ardnamurchan peninsula is a wonderfully remote “finger” of rocky land that stretches out to the furthest westerly point of the UK, just to the north of the Isle of Mull, and south of the Isle of Skye. It is accessed initially by a small ferry, and then by a narrow and twisty single-track road. It is famous for its outstanding and untouched beauty and abundance of natural resources.
The entire process has been designed to create an overall flavour profile that is expected from the distillery’s terroir: gentle peat smoke, rich oily/honey and dark fruit palate, chili pepper, sea salt and a little more smoke in the finish.
