The name Bunnahabhain, pronounced ‘Bu-na-ha-venn’ is Gaelic for ‘Mouth of the River’ as the Distillery was founded in 1881 near Port Askaig on the north-eastern shores of the Sound of Islay. Situated at the end of a four-miles long, unclassified, single-track road, Bunnahabhain is known for its spectacular surroundings and delicious signature unpeated (and softly peated) whiskies that are quite gentle due to the large, slow-run stills that allow for a significant degree of reflux, enhancing the comparatively light style.
In 2014, owners; Burn Stewart merged with Distell, which heralded more investment into both the brand and the distillery. Then in 2017, the Distillery’s packaging was further modernised and their portfolio of products was extended culminating in the opening of Bunnahabhain’s brand new Visitor Centre in 2021. The brand uses a ballad called ‘Westering Home’ (to Islay) as inspiration for their labelling and imagery of Bunna’s coastal setting. They’re the only distillery on the island to use pure spring-water drawn from the Margadale River via pipes that lead directly to the distillery and their stainless steel, copper top mash tun is one of the largest in Scotland, boasting a capacity of 12.5 tonnes.
