The Lagavulin distillery is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in Lagavulin on the island of Islay, Scotland. The name Lagavulin is an anglicisation of the Gaelic word (lag a’mhuilin), meaning “Hollow by the Mill”. It’s one of the big three heavily-peated southern Islay malts, alongside Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Although illicit distillation is said to have been carried out on the site since the mid-eighteenth century, Lagavulin was officially founded in 1816 by John Johnston and has been the Islay representative of Diageo’s Classic Malt selection since 1987.
