The Tobermory Distillery is located on the Isle of Mull, a Hebridean island in western Scotland, north of the isle of Islay. The distillery was founded in 1823 in a former brewery, which had been founded in 1797 by John Sinclair. It’s the only distillery on the Isle of Mull and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland. The distillery producers two different, but alluring, single malts: the fruity, unpeated Tobermory and the more robust and smoky Ledaig (pronounced letch-ick’ – meaning ‘safe haven’ in Gaelic), which was the original name of the distillery.
The distillery was purchased by Distell in 2013, and after its most recent hiatus in production for much needed maintenance and renovation, Tobermory Distillery reopened its doors and fired up the stills once more in 2019.
