Description
Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Michter’s Original Sour Mash Whiskey stood as the distillery’s top seller. The “sour mash” name comes from a traditional process, where distillers reuse part of a previous batch to start fermentation, much like sourdough. However, this whiskey built its reputation on flavour first.
Thanks to its unique grain bill, it sits outside standard categories, landing somewhere between bourbon and rye. Then, after disappearing in 1989, it made a long-awaited comeback in 2012 as part of the range. Today, Michter’s Sour Mash stays true to its roots and continues to win over modern whiskey drinkers across Australia, and the world.
It is made by taking Michter’s US1 Sour Mash Whiskey and then aging it in new charred American oak, before an additional period of time in a second custom made barrel. This second barrel is assembled from 18-month air-dried wood and then toasted but not charred.
Interesting Fact
Upon its being name “Whisky of the Year” for 2019 by The Whisky Exchange, Michter’s Sour Mash Whiskey became the first whiskey made in the United States to ever achieve this honour.
