Bottling Notes
Here’s a unique, cask strength, small-batch single malt from Corowa Distilling Co. that was matured in a single ex-Bourbon American Oak Barrel and finished in an ex-Maple Syrup cask. With only 130 bottles available, the expression is already a sell-out at the distillery and won’t last long on our virtual shelves.
John Atkins (verified owner) –
First impact is on the nose. I have to say a lot of the time when I open a bottle I can’t smell a thing. I think I must have an olfactory deficiency.
But on opening this bottle, my next door neighbour shouted “Maple Syrup.” The boys down at Corowa don’t do things by halves. AT 67.9% nothing is held back.
To taste it’s smooth and sweet. Brandy Snap sweet. Pancake stack sweet. Sultanas…no even more than that…Medjool Dates – Nothing subtle about this…and that’s its’ greatest strength and weakness. Have you ever had Vietnamese Coffee. Strong, sweet with a side of condensed milk ? Too much maybe.
You could pair this with ice cream and it would work. With Christmas pudding – you’d be in Santa heaven. If you need dessert and you’re cutting back on carbs. This is for you. But you won’t be back for seconds. It’s great…but not more-ish in that way…it lacks the subtly of the Hobart Winter Feast Bourbon/Maple Barrel which brought me here to compare.
If you want a sweet, pudding like dram. This is it. Amaze your friends with an after dinner surprise. Surely there’s such as thing as a Whisky Affogato. If not let’s invent one.
My sense of smell may not be the strongest. But I smell sweet sweet success….but maybe in the end..just too sweet.
