Despite the whimsical name and logo – it doesn’t taste like it.
This was my first Apera barrel whisky. I’m left with more questions than answers. It was all a bit “cherry” for me. And if I hadn’t already had the superb Ecto Gammat and Atlantic Crossing – I might have gone for four stars. This expression lacks attitude. It’s great spirit….no denying – Taking my lead from the best Australian peated – Ecto – I mixed this with a particularly big Caol Ila I had waiting for a braver me. The blend was perfect. The Fountain of Youth mellowed the cranky old Scot…and the offspring was an inspiration. Rather than masking the Fleurieu it just highlighted to me how good it can be given a chance to shine. I’m a convert to the Fleurieu style but this fountain of youth is still in nappies. Start with the others which are really worth your attention.
