Our tasting notes.
A real mixed back of a whisky that comes up trumps in the end. Lots of layers, all shadow boxing for a place on the main card, then realising that patience and a few air swings in the open air will take them to the 12th round for a win on points.
Although the ABV is a little lower that previous Beagles. Don’t be fooled, this is a big, rich whisky with vivacious aromas that could possibly divide the room, but that’s what we love about Australian whisky – A conversation starter – A belter – An ambrosial quagmire. 😉

Bottling Notes
The Beagle 7 is constructed of 8 barrels from 5 distilleries. Sherry, port, tokay, bourbon and peat with whiskies varying from 2 to 9 years of age.
Heartwood owner and independent bottler Tim Duckett comments;
“900ml of young peated whisky (2 and 3 years of age) were added to the concoction. It gave great length but also introduced a youthful upfront grassiness (a flaw in the whisky). To eliminate this flaw, we moved the brew into the sweat box at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees. We achieved the desired result, all of R L Stine novels wrapped into one (better than Mills and Boone analogy). Complexity and mystery and shock. The grassiness is gone but unfortunately the ABV over 4 to 6 months has gone from 62% to 55% and the volume decrease by nearly 20 litres. So less to go around”
The Beagle range of Heartwood whiskies pay homage to Charles Darwin’s ship that was called ‘HMS Beagle’ and his voyage of discovery and the evolution of whisky. The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the book he wrote and published in 1839 bringing him considerable fame and respect.
