Now here’s a belter of a single malt whisky with a bit of a back story of the casks used to mature the spirit.
It’s a Maxwell Wines gemstone, a 1960 Verdelho fortified and left to age in the limestone caves (affectionately known as mushroom caves) at the vineyard for over 40 years until moving them above ground in the year 2000 in an attempt to create an original Spanish Madeira, a fortified Verdelho aged in Spain then shipped to the island for further maturation.
Maxwell’s wanted to recreate this climate shift the cask experienced and treat the cask accordingly.
