Official tasting notes.
Bold bourbon-like aromas lift from the glass with notes of peach danish, demerara sugar, orange zest and spiced apple pie. On the palate, the whisky softens to flavours of salted caramel, butterscotch and lemon meringue with a finish of white chocolate from the bourbon casks dancing with caramelized stone fruits and a dusting of Christmas spice from the Apera cask.

Description:
This bottling is the fifth release in The Black Spot series named “M” that has a red hand drawn Cross on the front label as a tribute to Tasmania’s Dark Mofo 2023. The whisky is a marriage of 60% ex- Bourbon and 40% ex-Apera casks that was bottled at a super-punchy 55.8% making it the strongest of the entire Black Spot range.
The Remnant Whisky company was formed in January 2020 by Peter Bignell (Belgrove Distillery), his son Dane, and their associates. Together, they bought nearly 300 full barrels of Nant whisky from investors stung by the failed buy-back scheme under the previous owner of Nant, and put together a rescue deal to purchase the barrels, setting out to blend and bottle whisky that almost never saw the light of day.
The back label facetiously comments:
“When these casks were delivered by the (redacted) from (redacted) to our bond store, they all bore the mark of the Black Spot hiding the (redacted) logo. Now if we had been pirates, we would have been worried. However, unlike Billy Bones, we were more amused than frightened. That’s not to say we don’t still keep an eye out for strangers with wooden legs and parrots”
