This 2020 expression of Governor’s Reserve is the very first Peated Whisky released by the distillery using peat they imported from Scotland in their wash profile. The new-make spirit was matured in a vintage Seppeltsfield’s, French oak, Tawny barrel in Timboon’s bond store that was hand-picked by Head Distiller and limited to only 96 bottles.
Master Distiller Josh Walker comments…
“I look forward to creating each Governor’s Reserve, it just gets more exciting every release as I experiment with different barrels using the same base new make…until now. For the first time ever, we have a ‘peated’ whisky. Now, before you charge into thinking ‘Laphroaig 18’, you need to adjust your mindset a little! The new make for this Governor was distilled over 5 years ago with only 15% peat imported from Scotland in our wash profile. It’s a very mild smoke but combined with our heavy barrel char, has created what I think is a rich, thick finish that still maintains our typical ‘sweetness’”

Timboon Railway, and I got a ticket to ride.
The unboxing is so important. Arriving home with a package from The Old Barrel House on the doorstep is a great reward. A plus for online shopping. Love the packaging and good information. Flocking good. Reddish tinge. Port barrel? Sneak a sip. I kid you not,….first mini sip while perusing the label…my tongue involuntarily shot water right out of my mouth. Wow! Premature maceration. I love that feeling when you have invested in a bottle of whisky and on first tasting you know it’s been worth it. Life is too short for ordinary whisky.
As I get acquainted with this a bit more, it tastes a bit stronger than I would think of 54%. Not as viscous as I was hoping, and I’m not get any peat at all (I know they warned me…but it’s on the label) Third time out, sweetness. I’m tasting some chocolate…but not full on…brace yourself…it’s space-food stick chocolate. I’m transported from the Timboon Railway shed to the stars to 1975 and back again. That was worth the price of admission alone. The sign of a good whisky is everywhere it can take you outside the glass. I’d be willing to buy a ticket from Timboon any time and not even look at the destination….wherever it goes it will be worth the price of the ticket. All aboard!
