Description
Malting Season Second Edition is the second release in an annual series of expression produced entirely using barley malted from the Benriach distillery’s historic floor maltings. It comes hot off the heels of the inaugural release that was first launched in August 2021; the first expression in a century produced entirely using barley malted from the distillery’s floor maltings.
The whisky for this second edition was crafted entirely from 30 first fill bourbon barrels made from concerto barley, all distilled on November 20th, 2013 and bottled in 2022 at 48.9% ABV. Maturation in BenRiach’s dunnage warehouses with earthen floors, as opposed to concrete floors associated with racked warehouses, lend additional layers to the spirit, in essence, marinating in its own terroir.
Stewart Buchanan, Global Brand Ambassador at Benriach comments;
“Passed from maltster to maltster throughout the generations, the highly skilled process of floor malting keeps a traditional part of the whisky-making process alive, paying homage to Benriach’s creative whisky-making heritage. Each new edition of Malting Season will use carefully selected types of barley and bottling strength, making each annual edition one of a kind in their own right.”
Rachel Barrie, Master Blender at BenRiach comments;
“At Benriach, we never stop exploring how fruit, oak and barley flavours intertwine and mature in our broad range of eclectic casks. The unique process behind Malting Season allows the cereal flavour from the concerto barley to pull through and when married with the creamy, wholesome flavour from being two-cask matured in bourbon and virgin oak barrels, creates a truly unique expression.”
