Description:
Usual a ‘cellar door only’ release, the legends at Fleurieu sent a small allocation our way to share with our supporters. They’ve created quite the dilemma with this whisky, thrown down the proverbial ‘gauntlet of self-control’ if you will. I know we’re weak with abstinence issues; are you?
Best we let Gareth and Angela (owners and distillers at Fleurieu) explain this one;
“At cask strength Whisky de Garde is a Single Malt that has been specifically designed to be opened in August 2026 – five years from its release. While a lovely balanced sipper now, we believe it will be softer and rounder in five years… Here then is the challenge! We’ll be keeping stock aside for the grand opening of the cask strength single malt in 2026 – Can you”?
“The French phrase ‘de garde’ literally means ‘to keep’. Given their tumultuous history, Europeans have a habit of buying wines, spirits and even some types of ales to lay them down in cellars ready for the hard times. In stark contrast, Australians generally consume 95% of what they purchase from cellar door within the first few weeks of purchase”
Why then have we created this whisky?
Fact: “First fill cask whiskies do change in the bottle. We’ve noticed over time when sifting through museum stock that they are much softer in comparison to our original notes taken when they were first released”
