This Nikka Miyagikyo NAS (No Age Statement) is the perfect introduction to the Japanese whisky range. Launched back in 2015, it replaced the Nikka 10yo, 12yo and 15yo editions that are no longer produced. Nikka’s reason for this change in direction is simple; they have basically run out of old stock. It’s no marketing ploy and it’s not some PR stunt, it’s just an unfortunate fact. This is because demand for Japanese malts were so low both locally and internationally in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that few barrels were been filled and matured.
There have been whispers that they will bring back age-statement single malts in 5 or 6 years’ time but Nikka won’t commit to this as fact due to their honourable Japanese culture of not wanting to break a promise, so only time will tell.
