In 2015, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible awarded Suntory Whisky’s Yamazaki Sherry Cask ‘2013 World Whisky of the Year’. Since then, the anticipation and subsequent search for the 2016 edition has been akin to a modern-day zombie apocalypse where hordes of whisky addled neophytes joined whisky aficionados in a hysterical frenzy to secure at least 1 bottle of Japans finest.
This 2016 release incorporates the same whiskies that founded the base of the original 2013 award winning bottling but with a further two years of maturation. It also combines rare sherry cask single malt whiskies, some of which are over 25 years old.
Conceived by Suntory’s chief blender Shinji Fukuyo (great grandson of founder Shinjiro Torri), over one hundred malt whiskies were also chosen resulting in the creation of this absolute master piece.
Investment grade whisky that should appreciate nicely over time.
NOSE. A real depth of aromas, lots of raisins and dates, hypnotic.
PALATE. Well balanced and complex. Rich hazelnut chocolate, followed by dried figs and ripe plums.
FINISH. Long and rich. Sweet yet sour with lingering fruit and spice.
