Bottling Notes
This Backwoods Distilling Co. rye whisky, first release sold out at the distillery in 24 hours. Handcrafted in the Victorian High Country, the Distillery hopes ….. “you’ll be transported to the backwoods of Yackandandah with this unique Australian Rye whisky”.
The mash bill contains 60% malted rye, which delivers an earthy and ginger spice character. Then 25% pale malt barley, 10% wheat and a small amount of chocolate malt (approx. 5%), all added to tame the rye with their sweetness, nuttiness and creaminess. The new-make spirit was then laid to rest in two French Oak casks that previously held Australian Shiraz from the Barossa Valley with the rich rye character standing firm amongst the sweetness of the cask.
Nathan –
Absolutely exquisite. Such a well balanced flavour and for a rye to be this strong yet not overpowering is outstanding. Absolutely love it
John Atkins (verified owner) –
Same colour and Rye 2.
More earthiness…which is the grain…huskiness…taste the wheat, sweeter than number 2.
Sometimes things are big and sweet, big and alcohol…big and smokey…this has everything in small bits…and the Rye is just something fresh (as in new)…like wholemeal bread…as opposed to white bread. Mmmm Rye bread….don’t know….I’m off the carbs which started me on this whiskey journey to start with.
Almost a coffee nuance – coffee gelato.
It’s a Rye version of Aberlour Abundah!….imagine that with a bit more earthiness, not as sweet. But just as approachable.
