Official tasting notes
“Edition 55 is thick and stodgy with peat smoke and tar, some richly sweet smokiness, a lick of spice from American oak and a wee mineral smooch in the finish”.

Description
Whisky Sponge released a pair of sibling hogsheads of 2003 Caol Ila, Edition 54 & 55.
Both were bottled to celebrate nuance, subtle difference and intricacy of character. Both casks have been bottled with a few degrees’ reduction to 53% ABV with Whisky Sponge telling us they did this in order to make life even harder for themselves by creating even more confusion over which cask was which during the labelling process. hehe!
Whisky Sponge amusingly comments:
“This single refill hogshead of Caol Ila 2003 is one of two surreptitiously different casks bottled to commemorate the death of rationality, thoughtfulness, subtlety, empathy, tolerance, nuance, common sense, reason, respectful debate, irony and intuition”
About Caol Ila Distillery
Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, the Caol Ila distillery is situated on the west coast of Scotland in Islay near Port Askaig overlooking the cove and the Paps of Southern Jura. It’s the largest of eight working distilleries on the island of Islay and draws its water from Loch Nam Ban, whose water travels through peat and limestone before reaching the distillery. Lauded by malt lovers across the world, Caol Ila produces a lighter whisky, pale in colour with peppery, peaty and floral notes.
