Description
The Kilkerran 16 was a welcome addition to the distillery’s core range in 2020, and continues to be released annually. With each annual release the maturation can vary slightly, giving us a fresh take on the 16-year-old with each year.
The whisky is a marriage of 60% Sherry, 35% Bourbon and 5% Rum casks and similar to their “Work in Progress” series and all releases from Glengyle’s sister distillery Springbank, the whisky has not been chill-filtered with no added colouring. The whisky is also double distilled in the traditional Scottish style and is produced from lightly-peated malt at around 12-15ppm.
Unfortunately, Kilkerran bottlings are no longer a ‘best kept secret’ with small allocations making it to our shores and bottles snapped up around the world at lightning speed. This expression will sell out fast!
Why the name Kilkerran?
The name ‘Kilkerran’ is used for two reasons. Firstly, because the name ‘Glengyle’ is already used for a blended Highland malt and Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd were not able to purchase the rights to use that name that. Secondly, and more importantly, owners ‘Glengyle Ltd’ are very proud to be continuing the great Campbeltown Distilling tradition and the choice of name reflects that. Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’ which is the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran had his religious cell and where Campbeltown now stands.
