Here’s a red hot Kilkerran from Glengyle distillery that has arrived on our Aussie shores in very limited quantities. Aged full term in port casks and at cask strength, it’s purported to be one of the most sort after whiskies of the bunch. It has everything that Campbeltown whiskies are known for – beautiful sweet malt, soft earthy notes and delicate maritime flavours joined by the rich, juicy notes of port. The whisky is of natural colour and un-chill filtered…. what a winner.
Serge Valentin (whiskyfun.com) comments;
“When you try them, you could almost believe they had been distilled at Springbank.”
Unfortunately, Kilkerran bottlings are no longer a ‘best kept secret’ with small allocations making it to our shores with bottles snapped up around the world at lightning speed. This expression will be available via ballot.
Please note that all Kilkerran whiskies now come without presentation tubes/boxes as the distillery has one eye on sustainability and a cleaner future.
Why the name Kilkerran?
The name ‘Kilkerran’ is used for two reasons. Firstly, because the name ‘Glengyle’ is already used for a blended Highland malt and Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd were not able to purchase the rights to use that name that. Secondly, and more importantly, owners ‘Glengyle Ltd’ are very proud to be continuing the great Campbeltown Distilling tradition and the choice of name reflects that. Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’ which is the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran had his religious cell and where Campbeltown now stands. Kilkerran is thought to be a suitable name for a new Campbeltown malt since it was unusual for the old Campbeltown
